Apple Granted German Injunction Against Motorola for Slide to Unlock Patent Violation

apple vs motorola

Apple has been granted a permanent injunction (that it can choose to enforce at any time) against Motorola for violation of  a “unlocking a device by performing gestures on an unlock image” (slide to unlock) patent.  Unfortunately for Motorola this puts them in violation of the patent on most of their smartphone devices.  One device the German court did find to not be in violation is the Motorola Xoom tablet in which “the user has to make a swiping gesture from the inside of a circle to the outside“.  Of course Motorola will appeal the decision.  If Apple wins the appeal it would seem that a software update to change the lock screen to something similar to the Xoom would then take place.  It will be very interesting to see where this goes from here.
