AT&T has announced they have agreed to purchase NextWave Wireless, placing them in a position to take advantage of the AWS and WCS bands NextWave Wireless currently holds licenses to. 聽The $25 million dollar acquisition will allow AT&T to leverage the WCS spectrum to provide additional 4G LTE capacity, which could begin deploying in 3 years. 聽Though the acquisition itself is only costing AT&T $25 million, there also is a contingent payment of another $25 million, and AT&T will be on the hook for all of NextWave Wireless’ debt, totaling $600 million. 聽AT&T is currently awaiting FCC approval for the acquisition, and also awaiting approval for use of the WCS spectrum for mobile internet service.
