Google’s Maps Event Left Me Feeling Underwhelmed and a Bit Sleepy

yawn

Yesterday Google hosted a Google Maps event to announce what some thought would be big new features in Google Maps. 聽During the event, Google announced two things, offline maps for Google Maps, and 3d maps in Google Earth.

I will start by saying, I do think both of those features are very nice. 聽I think offline maps is something that will be very useful for many people. 聽3d in Google Earth is also a beautiful touch, however I think it would have been better if they could have incorporated it into Google Maps. 聽The problem I have with the event is, I don’t think neither of these features were enough to warrant having a special event just to announce them. 聽There was nothing said in that event that left me with a feeling of “boy I can’t wait for that update to come out”. 聽Nothing in that event left me anxiously awaiting the new features to be brought to my phone. 聽In other words, the event was somewhat yawn inducing, and quite frankly, I can’t help but think Google felt compelled to have this event in response to the rumors floating around about Apple’s upcoming Maps app having 3d.

This event was weak, nothing major was announced, and after the event I still felt the same way about Google Maps and Google Earth as I did prior to the event. 聽Rule of thumb: 聽If you are going to host an event, there should be a “wow” moment. 聽If there is nothing to create a “wow” moment, you shouldn’t be hosting an event. In summary, yesterday’s event was a waste of time.
