Mobile World Congress hasn’t even come yet and LG has already announced one of their upcoming phones, the LG Optimus Vu.  Apparently LG couldn’t sit on the phone for any longer and had to spill the beans.  The strangely square phone’s specs have also been made official.  The LG Optimus Vu will pack a 1.5ghz dual core processor, 2080mAh battery, 8mp camera, LTE, and a 5″ 1024×768 IPS screen with 4:3 aspect ratio.  The Optimus Vu will ship running Android 2.3 Gingerbread though LG promises it will be upgraded to Ice Cream Sandwich within 3 months…sure LG we’ve heard you say that before *looks over at pissed off G2X customers*.  One thing that stands out about this phone is its oddball 4:3 ratio.  Though it’s a device with an HD screen, LG went with a resolution that isn’t really made for HD, a 4:3 square-like resolution.  So while other phones with HD displays are displaying HD content in widesreen 16:9 aspect ratio like it’s supposed to, LG is forcing it to fit on a 4:3 aspect ratio.  Think of it this way, it’s like trying to put a HD picture in your old tube TV.  That just doesn’t look right.

So let’s tally up the score:

It’s made by LG – Not a good thing.  LG is notorious for extremely poor support on their devices.

It has an oddball 4:3 aspect ratio – Though it has a new school HD resolution, it has an old school aspect resolution.  I’m sorry but I haven’t exactly been clamoring for a square phone with old school aspect ratio.

It ships with Gingerbread – Though many phones are shipping with Gingerbread, I just don’t trust LG for timely upgrades.  When the G2X came out they said they’d update it “in a couple weeks”.  That phone shipped in April and the first round of updates didn’t start until Summer, then they stopped (due to it bricking many devices) and didn’t re-release the update until December.  That’s a far cry from “a couple weeks”.  I wouldn’t be suprised if the “3 months” LG claims they will update the Optimus Vu in turns into 6-9 months.  I think you’ll be saying Happy New Year before you’ll be saying “I got my ICS upgrade”.
