Metro PCS Launches World’s First VoLTE Service

A while back, we published an article about VoLTE being the best benefit of LTE that nobody is talking about. 聽I’d venture to guess Metro PCS would agree, as they have become the world’s first carrier to roll out Voice Over LTE (VoLTE) service. 聽In case you aren’t familiar, VoLTE allows for voice calls to be transmitted over LTE, as opposed to LTE only being used for data. 聽Other carriers such as Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T currently only have the capability of transmitting data over LTE, and require a second radio in your phone to transmit phone calls. 聽With Metro PCS’ VoLTE network, all voice calls can be handled over LTE (if you’re in a VoLTE market). 聽Of course you’ll also need compatible hardware if you intend to take advantage of Metro PCS’ VoLTE network. 聽Metro PCS currently only offers one VoLTE compatible handset, the LG Connect 4G, and it is currently only available at one store location nationwide. 聽As is made obvious by the limited availability of compatible hardware, Metro PCS’ VoLTE network is still in its infancy, but it’s awesome to see smaller carriers pushing the envelope.
