Tethering Plans are RIDICULOUS!

tether-dollas

Tethering plans are ridiculous and quite frankly I consider them to be predatory.  Cell phone companies are making money by double dipping.  They are charging customers twice for the same data consumption.  Cell phone companies claim that you should have to pay to connect a device to your cell phone if that device is using your phone’s data connection.  I think that’s a crock of bull!  If I’m paying for 5 gigs of data, then it shouldn’t matter how I use that data.  Whether the data consumption is directly from my phone or from a tethered laptop or tablet 5 gigs of data is still 5 gigs of data.  Why should I have to pay more money than I’m already paying to use the same amount of data I was already using just because I want to connect my laptop?  If at the end of a billing cycle I use 3 gigs of data with my cell phone use combined with tethering, how is that any different than if I use 3 gigs of data directly from my phone?  Simply put, it isn’t.  There’s no difference at all. The only difference is what the cell phone company wants to charge you for the exact same data usage.  In my opinion, this practice borders on criminal.  Imagine if when you got gas, the gas station told you that you were not allowed to travel out of the state with the particular grade of gas you purchased, and that if you wanted to travel out of state you needed to purchase a different higher priced gasoline.  That would be ludicrous and nobody would accept that.  Well it’s the same concept when it comes to cell phones.  The cell phone companies are needlessly charging additional fees for a service they really aren’t providing.    Time to do away with tethering charges.
