TSC Questions Resized

I was thinking of switching cell phone carriers and recently tried out AT&T.  Let me first say that I was originally a T-Mobile customer, so I am used to being able to use my data while I am on a phone call.  When I tried out AT&T it was horrible.  Aside from all the dropped calls, their data during phone calls is so slow, it’s practically non-existent.  It’s crazy that when I wanted to send someone a picture while I was on a call it took almost 10 minutes for the picture to send.  When I tried to upload a picture to Instagram while on a call, it took even longer.  I eventually had to just hang the phone up so I could upload my picture.  After dealing with AT&T’s horrible data while I was on a call, I switched to Verizon.  At least with Verizon I can use LTE while I’m on the phone, which I couldn’t do with AT&T.

Julius, you are absolutely correct, AT&T’s data during phone calls is abysmal at best.  I wrote a story and did a video demonstration regarding this.  The download speeds are slowed down to around the 1 meg point, and the upload is slowed down to the almost unusable speed of 20k.  The funny thing about it all, is at one point AT&T’s marketing strategy was boasting about being able to use data while on a call.  Now their data is almost unusable while on a call.  I am currently with T-Mobile, and though I’m not satisfied with them, I dare not switch to AT&T because of their ridiculously slow on-call data speeds.  I won’t consider Sprint or Verizon because I prefer GSM.  Unfortunately, due to AT&T’s throttling of data while on phone calls, that leaves me with no other choice besides T-Mobile.

I am thinking about purchasing an iPhone 4S, and am not sure if I should or not.  I am currently with T-Mobile but I will be switching to a different carrier if I get the 4S.  I currently am using an iPhone 3G and need a new phone because my current one is starting to give me problems.  I am considering switching to Sprint or Verizon but am not sure if I should take the plunge.  What do you think?

-Janice

Janice, I think it’s a bit late in the game to be jumping on board the iPhone 4S train.  That smartphone has been out for more than half a year, and a new one may be coming out later this year.  If the new iphone is released this year, it will likely have LTE.  As a result, you will be kicking yourself if you buy the 4S now, since you’ll be stuck on Sprint or Verizon’s horribly slow 3G network.  If you’re hellbent on getting an iPhone, I’d suggest buying a cheap smartphone off Ebay or Craigslist to hold you over until the next iPhone comes out.  With you using an iPhone 3g currently, practically anything will be a step up for you.  Doing that will preserve your device upgrade for use when the next iPhone is released.
